Hidden away on the corner of Galway and Commerce Street is a picturesque little dumpling bar, like no other. Concealed by rich foliage – one step through the gates and you’re swept away to a place so far from the hustle and bustle of Britomart.
Award-winning Xuxu encapsulates relaxed romanticism, only enhanced by the exposed brick walls, woven tables and fairy lights. Inside reveals moody elegance with drapes and low-hanging lights, accompanied by nooks perfect to nestle up in for hours. Xuxu specialises in hand-crafted food and exquisite cocktails, proving that doing one thing, and doing it right is a beautiful thing.
General Manager Pauline sat down with us in their idyllic courtyard and gave us a glimpse into what makes Xuxu, Xuxu.
Can you tell me a little bit about the place?
We have three restaurants, I’m not sure if you have been to the other ones but they are a similar vibe – really chill, romantic places. It’s a great little hiding spot because we are so close to the busy outside, with the train station and Britomart right there, but when people come in they all have the same reaction, even me when I first came here, it’s like – “oh wow, this is here?!” No one expects to have this little bar tucked away in Britomart, a little breath of fresh air, nestled in its greenery.
What is Xuxu’s point of difference?
There are not many places around here that have a nice cocktail list with the association of dumplings, and that fusion is the main difference. Plus, we have the best staff here!
What helped you through the difficult times last year?
All of the restaurants have been affected but the main difference for us was that we have a lot of regular customers come in which made a huge impact in supporting our business. This area is mainly backed by corporates, so when the offices were closed it did impact our venue. However, as soon as they were open again, all of our regulars came right back which was great.
What’s your favourite item on the menu?
Our most popular is the duck and leek pan-fried dumpling, people really favour them. For me, I love the prawn and ginger har gao because we do it so differently. It is spicy but also really fresh – it’s a nice balance. You don’t even need the soy sauce or the chilli oil on the side, you can have them on their own and it is enough. Even speaking about them is making me hungry!
What’s your favourite thing about working here?
My team! We are all from different countries which makes it so interesting to work with each other. None of us come with the same vision which means we learn so much from each other. It adds to the beauty of Xuxu, because our customers are also all so different, yet they all eat the same.
Do you have any deals or events coming up?
Yes, we have events we are planning. Keep an eye out for announcements on our socials!
